Getting Your Item Tested

The analysis of antiquities by XRF is fast, efficient and safe. The testing process is entirely non-destructive and does not impair the surface of the object. Your artefacts (for example, coins, jewellery, ceramics and other antiquities) requiring authentication and certification should be made available to one of our specialist teams.

What we need to know

  • Where the object is  –  so that we can recommend our nearest agent or arrange a site visit.
  • The type and quantity of objects you require to be tested – e.g. bronze Medieval statuette, gold Roman ring, ten silver Viking coins, etc.

What you should know

  • XRF is a totally non-destructive method: delicate and fragile artefacts can be analyzed at atmospheric pressure without risk of damage.
  • Certification will include your results displayed in a table of elements and a spectrograph image showing the composition.
  • Certification will include a statement advising whether the analysis is consistent with our database of known authentic results for similar objects.
  • Our certificates are held in very high regard worldwide and can add greatly to the value of a piece.

How to get your item tested

  • Arrange for your item to be sent or brought to one of our agents by either telephoning us or using the contact page.
  • For collections it may be possible for us to test your pieces on site, in situ.
  • Objects will only be tested by our trained technicians.

What you will receive

  • Only one certificate will be issued per object; it will include the item’s weight and size, plus a photograph where possible.
  • Each certificate will include a unique registration number and will be  counter-signed by two of our technicians.
  • No certificate will be issued until payment is received.
  • Certificates are normally processed and issued by email and a hard copy posted within 14 working days.

  • Usage

    XRF spectroscopy is widely used for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of environmental, archaeological, geological, biological, industrial and other samples.
  • Compared to rival techniques, such as Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy (ICPS) and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), XRF has the advantage of being non-destructive, multi-elemental, fast and cost-effective.
  • Furthermore, XRF provides a good, uniform detection level across a large portion of the Periodic Table and is applicable to a wide range of concentrations, from 100% down to a few parts per million (ppm).
